Anybody is capable of making peanut butter, all you need is few ingredients and a blender, and you are in business. Just as the actual product is simple, making peanut butter is also simple. There are, however, one or two stages before peanuts can actually become a spread and can be spooned over your bread or toast. Place some peanuts in a blender and turn it on; initially the mix looks impossibly crumbly at the bottom of your mixer and looks nothing like the famous paste should. But the key is not to panic; don’t be tempted to throw your mix away, have trust in your convictions and let the blender do its work. After a few minutes, the oils from the nuts start to bind the mixture and it begins to resemble something that is edible. In about three to five minutes you may think you have the real McCoy but keep blending away. Between five and seven minutes the mixture goes through a transformation and something magical happens, it suddenly becomes a few degrees softer and is the correct smooth texture. Suddenly you realize that you have created what all your peanut butter dreams have been made of – the perfect smooth spread.

What You Should Expect

Looking at your homemade creation and dipping your finger into the mix, you may be a little disappointed at the end result. Homemade peanut butter will never be as smooth or taste exactly as the commercial brands, such as Skippy. Your homemade creation will always have a slightly rougher texture, try adding a little more peanut oil to help elevate the creamy texture and taste. If you use a powerful blender, this will also help. And giving the nuts a good roasting in the oven often brings out the buttery and nutty flavor more because it warms the oils up and helps the blended mixture to jell better. If you are adventurous, you can apply this very basic technique to other favorite nuts or combination of nuts. So, you can make your own pistachio or almond butter which will definitely impress your friends. Also try adding a little more salt to taste and perhaps add a little honey, this will bring a ying and yang to the whole mix, and the butter will have a perfectly balanced flavor.
